Well, you might just get two posts out of me yet. Haha, if it doesn’t rain it pours.
I’ve been toying with an idea for a while now and that idea is making a YouTube channel. My thoughts have been to maybe narrate bits of my short stories or novels. Maybe even do a bit of voice acting drama for them. Make them come alive. It was one of these ideas that crawls into your head, as you are running your 6km run around the river and across the hidden forests of your neighbourhood.
It sounds like a very big undertaking, but also looks like a hell of a lot of fun. I still need to do some more research regarding my written work and what publishers and magazines will permit before they won’t accept your work. So I think I shall do a side experiment to test how it all goes. I am going to create a predominately science fiction based gaming channel! This probably will be me reinventing the wheel, like I have for this website and my Twitter. In my experience, I tend to follow my imagination and create something scratch (Which is silly), when someone else has gone and done the hard yards and helpfully put out a tutorial.
Why a sci fi and strategy gaming channel? Well, amongst a few of my friends I have been writing posts of gaming news and interesting things that have cropped up whilst I have been gaming. So I at least have something to say or do and if I am already doing that, I think half the works done (Ha ha, recording, editing, fx and a ton of other things unforeseen).
So this experimental Youtube channel, what am I going to call it? Lord Seb. Why Lord Seb? Well there is a backstory to that. First and foremost its my handle I have used since the dawn of time for my gaming. How did it come around? Well back in the day, I got Age of Empires 2, when it first came out in 1999. Whilst it wasn’t were I first used Lord Seb, it was the first time it really stuck for a user name for gaming. My friends from school and I used to play AOE2 quite a bit. It really was our go to game, haha, we still played it a bit in 2005-6ish.
I remember I used to really enjoy Friday evenings or Saturdays after all the Homework was done. I’d go over to my mate’s house and play AOE2 until about 9pm. It would be Colonel Sveeg and Lord Seb. Some dastardly politicking and then ‘You are under attack by Colonel Sveeg’. An army of Teutonic knights come charging over to solve the issue, banners held high, cloaks flapping in the wind. Janissaries with their gunpowder arms constant firing at the knights. Undaunted, they send the Janissaries packing. I remember another time, Sveeg was not impressed with my catapults knocking a path through the forest to the back of his base. This was some really really dense forest, but you know… Who wants to charge a castle or bombard towers. Some games got a bit cutthroat, to the point we would build towers and castles in each others bases, as an insurance policy when we were allies.
Overall I guess, I am a bit sentimentally attached to the handle. So that probably plays some part in the choice.
Anyway, so I have YouTube plan. So where to start? Well a YouTube channel needs pictures, specifically a DP pic and a banner. So I have commenced designing them. Your looking at a man who last did digital imagery stuff back in grade eight or nine, on an extinct software called Macromedia Fireworks. It’s so old, that Adobe who bought out Macromedia has stopped supporting it in 2014. I have however found a solution to use GIMP, a freeware software.
My plan for a DP pic was keep it simple, make stand out and have a little, noble late 17th century charm. I love my blues and so logically a nice deep naval blue, midnight sort of blue background seems logical. What’s in my mind is the texture and imparted feel of a flag blowing in the wind, but I am still remembering about textures so it will probably be a bit smooth to start with. In the note of keeping simple, just the initials L and S are appropriate.
With the L and S, what comes to mind is gold metal, in a bold yet refined font. Times New Roman will have to do, I suppose. It has the slight sharp edges and fits the bill of impact and refinement. From the start, I am thinking the deep gold letters off a British mailbox or a company insignia out of the 17th century. The sort that has a weighty and elegant, emboss and bevel, which is imposing yet pleasant to see.
Anyway after numerous trials of trying to make that happen, I give the design:
It’s not perfect, but I think it is a decent attempt. If I am successful in this experiment, I am going to go and hire a graphics designer, but this is an experiment after all.
Let’s see what these hands and mind can create.
Next thing shall be the banner for the channel, but that is a post for another. What do you guys think? The image any good?
